MALE BREAST REDUCTION (GYNECOMASTIA)

Male breast reduction, or gynecomastia surgery, is a popular plastic surgery procedure that is used to treat gynecomastia – breast growth in men. Gynecomastia, also known as “man boobs”, is a common disorder among adult men – around 15% of adult men are affected by gynecomastia. Gynecomastia is not a serious medical condition but it can affect the confidence and self-esteem of an individual.
Gynecomastia Symptoms

Enlargement of the breast tissue is the primary symptom of gynecomastia. Men who have normal weight but have developed excess breast tissue may be affected by gynecomastia.

There are two types of gynecomastia:

Real gynecomastia is caused by the excess growth of the breast tissue. In this case excision is recommended for the removal of breast tissue.

Pseudogynecomastia, also called fake gynecomastia, may look like gynecomastia but it’s caused by the excess fat in the chest area rather than the excess breast tissue. If pseudogynecomastia can’t be treated by weight loss and chest exercises, liposuction may become a good option.

It is recommended that obese individuals and overweight people should consider losing weight before applying for a gynecomastia removal surgery.

Gynecomastia Causes

Main cause of gynecomastia is the hormonal changes (imbalance of testosterone and estrogen hormones) during puberty stage. Excess consumption of alcohol, drugs, anabolic steroids, antibiotics, chemotherapy and certain medications may also lead to gynecomastia.

HOW IS MALE BREAST REDUCTION (GYNECOMASTIA) PERFORMED ?

Excisional Gynecomastia Surgery

If the patient has excess glandular tissue, excision is required. First, local anesthesia is administered to the patient. The surgeon makes an incision just below the areola and proceeds with the excision of the glandular tissue. Liposuction may be performed if necessary. The operation takes 1 to 2 hours.

Gynecomastia Surgery with Liposuction – Pseudogynecomastia

If the patient only suffers from the excess fat in the chest area, a liposuction surgery is sufficient. First, the surgeon administers local anesthesia to the patient. The surgeon proceeds the surgery with making tiny incisions around the areola and passing a metal cannula through these incisions. The cannula is connected to the suction device which is used to remove the excess fat tissue from patient’s chest. The operation usually takes 1 to 2 hours.

Both operations are performed with absorbable sutures, so there is no need to remove them after surgery.
